What we're buying? (scope and mount)
Lunt LS60THa solar scope
iOptron ZEQ25 GT mount
Why we're buying it?
Normal White Light solar filtered telescopes only allow you to see a small amount of the activity on the sun's surface (sunspots and some filaments), making the surface appear to be relatively smooth and bland (see the image comparision below).
Whereas a Hydrogen-Alpha filtered telescope, like the one that FWAS is trying to raise funds to purchase, allows the observer to see much, much more (prominences, early sunspot formation regions, detailed filaments, surface granularity, and more) - the dynamic nature of the Sun, in real-time, is easily revealed. The image below shows the difference in details seen through both kinds of telescopes.
(Left: Hydrogen-Alpha Image - Right: White-Light Image)
With this solar telescope's advanced and expanded abilities, over a regular white light filtered telescope, we will be able to better teach our general membership, our young astronomers, and the public at large about the dynamic nature of our closest star, the Sun. This will open up vastly more opportunites for our club to research and pass that knowledge on to other members and to the public at our outreach and educational events.

Here's another way to help FWAS
When you login to the AmazonSmile side of the Amazon.com websight, Amazon will donate 0.5% of your eligible purchases to the Fort Worth Astronomical Society (FWAS). It's the same Amazon you know. Same products, same prices, same service, only now your purchases will be helping a local community organization - at no extra cost to you.
How do I shop at AmazonSmile?
Simply click on the "get started" button above or enter http://smile.amazon.com in your internet browser. On your first visit to AmazonSmile, you will be prompted to select a charitable organization (Fort Worth Astronomical Society) to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. AmazonSmile will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make on the "FWAS Amazon.com Smile" sight will result in a donation to our club.
